AUTHORITARIAN FAMILY = DEPENDENCE

The authoritarian structure that parents create over their children can push children into substance abuse. Antalya Psychologist stated that parents should establish their relationship with their child within the framework of a democratic attitude from a young age and said, “Otherwise, our authoritarian or over protective attitude that we use will be one of the biggest harms that we cause to our child’s adult life.

According to the results of the research conducted on this subject, it has been found that 49 percent of the students who use harmful substances have authoritarian parents, and 52 percent do not receive enough attention from their family,” he said.

“Rights and freedom should be taught”

A psychologist and Turkey Medicals member working at a private VM Medical Park Mersin Hospital gave information about the ‘Effect of family attitude on children’. Psychologist said, “The healthy communication established between parents and child forms the foundations of the communication that the child will establish in social life in the future. If a mother and father want to make a positive contribution to the development of their child, they should first get to know themselves. Successful parents are those who sense the needs of their child, are not overly tolerant or strict, but have a flexible attitude towards the child, help the child to control himself, develop a sense of responsibility in the child, leave them alone with the consequences of events, teach them the limits of their rights and freedoms, raise him as a person who can discipline himself,” he said.

“Loyalty and dependence should not be confused”

Psychologist, who expressed that the family is of great importance for the success or failure of the child, said, “For this reason, we should pay attention to some of our negative behaviors when raising a child. For example, one of the most common of these negative behaviors is that the concepts of commitment and addiction are confused with each other. Parents may be attached to their children, but if they go so far as not to separate them from their knees, then this takes on the dimension of dependence, and as a result of this behavior, our child becomes timid and insecure. In this case, we should not expose our child to our behaviors that he will become addicted to, understanding that addiction and commitment are not the same thing,” he said.

“Be sure to listen to the problem”

Psychologist, who stated that listening to children is extremely important in their personality development, noted that:

“If your child expresses a problem, your child should be offered an environment where he can talk, empathy should be established during the conversation and his feelings should never be underestimated. For example, we should approach our child with empathetic expressions such as; ‘I understand you very well, son, you feel very sad because your toy is broken, you think you can’t play with it yet’. In this way, we will help him recognize his feelings and thoughts and learn to express himself in this way. We must establish our communication with our child within the framework of a democratic attitude from an early age, otherwise our authoritarian or overprotective attitude that we use will be one of the biggest harms that we cause to our child’s adult life. “
